Jon Tillar, “Running in Circles”

In honor of the 4th of July and fireworks, I wanted to share this video that was created by two of my inspiring artist friends.

Jon Tillar is an amazing song writer and an inspiration on what it is to live each moment to the fullest. He is also the kind of guy that pursues his desires and dreams, hence this video. He invited a few family and friends out to farm in the middle of nowhere to witness his own fireworks show. It was awesome—in the true sense of the word.

Another good friend, Andy Reale shot this video for his song and to document this event. It’s amazing how he totally captured the essence of Jon in a way that no one else could. He is an unbelievable artist behind the camera and his work constantly inspires me.

Coldplay, “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”

I love seeing how this band evolves with each new album. They aren’t afraid to change and reinvent themselves through their style and sound. I especially love the colors and integration of still shots in this video. Can’t wait to hear the whole album.

“The Legend of Zelda” is one of my favorite video games/series of all time. I remember when my older brother and I got our first Nintendo and he started playing that game—I was probably 6 or 7. After excitedly watching him play for a while, I got my sword and pretended that I was Link and that the pillows on our couch were octoroks (bad guys). Zac Gorman’s illustrations are so great at capturing the kid inside us all while injecting a little grown up humor. Check him out:

Artist Robin Luciano Beaty in her studio that she built on her property in Massachusettes. That would be a dream come true for me. I really like her work—her paintings make me think of ethereal landscapes. She does encaustic painting which looks pretty time intensive but has a really cool look. I’d love to try it someday, somehow. She also has annual open studio events open to the public which would be so cool to go to. I love the idea of having people view your finished work in the space in which it was created and hope to be able to hold open studio events myself. Again, someday, somehow.

JASPER JOHNS (American, born 1930)

I admit, I don’t know much about him or why he painted what he did. Sometimes I just like things because I like them. And here is why I like Jasper Johns and his work:

I love his use of color and the simplicity of his subject matter. He paints pictures of numbers and iconic imagery/symbols—and they are amazing. Who would have thought you could get away with that? There is something in his paint application and layering that makes me want to get better as an artist myself. He’s able to create hard edges with soft nuances. In a world where art is so complicated and over-analyzed, it’s refreshing to see Jasper Johns’ creations.
